Actinic Keratosis (AKs) are lesions most commonly seen on hands, arms, scalp, and face. They can be unseen, flat and red, crusty and flakey, or little sores that will not heal. They can lead to skin cancers. You may have been "zapped" with freezing before to remove these. Fortunately, there is new way to treat these. We use a medication applied to the skin called Levulan. After about 1 hour we then place you in a device known as a BLU-U light for about 13 minutes. This emits a cool blue light at a wavelength of 417nm and is not painful. Afterwards, you may peel slightly, and you must avoid sun for 24 hours. The reaction of the medication and the light destroy these harmful cells. You will also notice some decrease in sun damaged pigment and some improvement in skin texture. |
